The heart of the multi-faceted use of the Kirtland Center for the Performing Arts is the Performing Artist Series, and the newly structured “Build-Your-Own-Season” ticket program is designed to give patrons who see four or more shows a generous discount, even if they do not buy a full eight-show season ticket. “We know that financially, times are still tight,” said KCPA Coordinating Director Jomarie Gurnow, “We want to give folks a way to use their entertainment dollars for high quality, live performances without breaking the bank, or being forced to buy tickets for every show.”

“We have engaged performers for 2011-2012, mindful of the type of entertainment that appeals to our Northern Michigan patron base,” Gurnow said. “Before people can experience the exhilaration of a live audience, they have to want to see the artist who is performing.” “No one will leave any performance at the KCPA disappointed,” Gurnow said. “Every show is tremendous.”

When a patron purchases tickets for two or more Premium Shows at KCPA, they may purchase the same seats for two or more Value Shows at half-price. “We call them value shows because they are feature world-class entertainment at an especially low price,” Gurnow said. Value shows include grand scale illusionist Bill Blagg (think David Copperfield); the spectacular Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre that is a stunning mix of music, dance, color and folklore; the Celtic bombshell musical group Slide that had everyone on their feet for their previous engagement at KCPA; and the family holiday extravaganza, “A Christmas Carol” that will feature food, music, art, caroling, and the show!

With a “Build-Your-Own-Season” package, a person can see a first-class live performance for less than the price of a movie ticket with popcorn and a soda. And the refreshments are still complimentary at the Kirtland Center.

We also offer low-cost child care in the new, nearby, on-campus Children’s Learning Center; date night with dinner available at the Kirtland Grille before Richard Marx, Sinbad and Bill Blagg; a courtesy parking shuttle; and ticket and gift giveaways at each performance.

Our local community partners can take advantage of sponsorships featuring live “commercials” in front of hundreds of patrons at each performance to reach their customer base in a fun and entertaining way. “Sponsoring a show at Kirtland gives businesses a way to build a one-on-one ‘live’ relationship with our audience,” Gurnow said. “It should be much more personal and impactful than running an ad anywhere else.”

Description: Papa Doo Run Run presents a tribute to the Beach Boys! The group also had an unprecedented 15-year run as the “Celebrity House Band” at Disneyland from 1975-90!

Date: Saturday, April 9, 2011

Time: 7:00 p.m

Ticket Prices: $26 (A/B) & $24 (C/D)

About Papa Doo Run Run
The year was 1965. The air was clean, music refreshingly innocent, and in Cupertino California, a small, pre-Silicon Valley town just south of San Francisco near Santa Cruz, 4 high school buddies got together to form a garage band.

This was not just any garage band – this band was special. They would succeed where others would fail – they would continue where others would die off. They had a focus where other bands just rambled. They wore suits! (and this was the 60’s). They believed that “good enough” never was. PAPA DOO RUN RUN (their name derived from the background line of Jan & Dean’s New Girl in School), established a solid performance schedule, playing as many as 200 dates a year, worldwide.

After meeting limited success with a few recording ventures in the 60′s and early 70′s, PAPA DOO RUN RUN caught the big wave with Be True To Your School (1975, RCA), produced by their friend Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys. That single cracked the Billboard Top 40 chart, and hit No. 1 in California, earning them “KAHUNA” status among the veteran surf legends of the day. The flip side was a song called Disney Girls, which opened the door for what was to become an unprecedented 15 year run at Disneyland, as the “celebrity house band” (1975-90). Be True… was followed by a string of singles and EP’s, all of which received a respectable amount of airplay. PAPA DOO RUN RUN’s most significant recording accolade is a GOLD RECORD award and a GRAMMY nomination for their California Project CD (1985, Telarc Records). Since that time, PAPA has released 6 other CDs, including their critically acclaimed, all original album Santa Cruz (2001, Blue Pacific Records).

In the early 70’s PAPA met Jan & Dean (who had stopped performing in 1966 because of Jan’s debilitating car accident) and convinced the duo to get back together. After a series of very successful “trial concerts”, came 5 years of nationwide tours, a CBS-TV movie (Deadman’s Curve ) and soundtrack album. In the early 80s PAPA left Jan & Dean and for the next 2 decades, toured and recorded with members of the Beach Boys. PAPA DOO RUN RUN has also appeared in concert with such luminaries as Roy Orbison, Fleetwood Mac, Kenny Loggins, Chicago, Jimmy Buffett, and a zillion other huge names. Their most notable performances include two Olympics, eight Super Bowls, and twoInaugurations. In 1988, PAPA was dubbed “CALIFORNIA’S BAND” by California’s then Governor Dukmejian.

PAPA DOO RUN RUN’s lineup today includes: Don Zirilli – keyboards and vocals, Jim Rush – bass and vocals, (both of whom are original members since 1965); Adrian Baker – guitar and vocals, who for 20 years was a member of the Beach Boys, and prior to that was with Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons; Bobby “G” Gothar – guitar and vocals, who has performed with Merle Haggard, and Charlie Daniels; studio drummer Bo Fox, who throughout the 80’s toured with Jimmy Buffett and the Eagles; and (when he’s not touring with Brian Wilson), Jeffrey Foskett – lead vocalist and guitarist for the Beach Boys from 1980-90

Red Green Show brought faces ‘red’ with laughter.
An opinioned observational piece
Cari Talarico

It took me a little over a month to write this article. I’d never done a review on a KCPA event before and frankly wasn’t sure how to do it. I had plenty to say-8 pages worth and got to work. Then a mini interview was published in the Kirtland Current on Red Green mixed in with a little bit of a review. How could I do the performer justice when it was already done? But I’d made a commitment to do a review and bring the performer acknowledgement and I try to keep my commitments. Actually the mini review gave me freedom to do an article not as Cari Talarico, Kirtland Current reporter, but as myself.

On Saturday, February 12, 2011 at KCPA, Canadian native Red Green Show Performer Red Green (aka Steve Smith) played for two sold out shows! 1600 tickets were sold.

On stage Green acknowledged everyone equally, he enjoyed a rapport with everyone. Green told hilarious jokes about a variety of subjects; marriage, rednecks and Canadians were a few of them. Many of Green’s jokes ended in standing ovations which he received with a sweet smile that portrayed humbleness and gratitude.

The audience clapped hard, creating a unique sound that sounded almost like drums. People laughed so hard some of their faces were still a little red during intermission and after the show ended. Green gave many ‘red neck’ tips and advice that perhaps many might never have heard of; as bizarre as these tips appeared, they seemed practical. No matter how much cash one makes, that person always likes to save a buck or two.

At the end of the second show, everyone crowded together in a line that went from the vending machines almost to the automotive doors to have Green sign a slip of duct tape and/or their copy of one of his books:
“HOW TO DO EVERYTHING
FROM THE MAN WHO WOULD KNOW
RED GREEN.”

The line was so long it took one hour and 25 minutes to clear. What a line it was! People of all ages walked around with a slip of duct tape on their foreheads. Children giggled as they watched Green and men of all ages were dressed like Green. Green smiled, joked, shook hands and posed with everyone. Everyone included many former and present Kirtland faculty, staff and students.

It was a performance to be remembered.

This friday the Kirtland Center will present the Michigan-based Eisenhower Dance Ensemble for a recital at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 for general admission.

Michigan’s premier contemporary dance company, begins its twentieth professional season this year. Artistic director Laurie Eisenhower founded the company in the summer of 1991 in metropolitan Detroit. Since its inception, the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble has been dedicated to the performance of a diverse range of contemporary dance works. Along with Ms. Eisenhower’s highly acclaimed choreography, EDE showcases the works of young talented artists along with choreographers with established reputations. The company has boasted works by internationally known choreographers such as David Parsons, Stephen Koester, Michael Foley, Kiesha Lalama-White, Mark Dendy, Joel Hall, Eddy Ocampo, Lila York, Colin Connor and Billy Siegenfeld, among others. With support from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, the company has also collaborated with Michigan Opera Theatre, the Warren Symphony, the Immigrant Suns, the Rackham Symphony Choir in Carmina Burana and the Motor City Lyric Opera and the Toledo Opera in Amahl and the Night Visitors.

Eisenhower Dance Ensemble has produced several full-evening length touring productions. These include Motown in Motion, a visual salute to the tunes that made Motown records famous, Laugh Tracks, an evening of comedy in dance, Igor Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale with Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings as part of the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, and Dances from the Heart of Rock and Roll, a heartfelt tribute set to folk and rock music.

Considered by many critics to be one of the finest contemporary dance companies in the nation, Eisenhower Dance Ensemble has received overwhelming critical acclaim along with enthusiastic audience support: “stunning” (Gloria Shay, Holland Sentinel), “intelligently crafted repertoire” (Susan Isaacs-Nisbett, Dance Magazine), “dance that touches the soul” (Susan Hall-Balduf, Detroit Free Press), “an eye-popping production” (David Lyman, Detroit Free Press), “a hearty, no-nonsense way of moving (Jack Anderson, The New York Times), and “a finely interwoven company (California, Beverly Hills Outlook). The company’s concert schedule has taken it to theatres throughout the state of Michigan and on tours across the United States as well as St. Petersburg, Russia. The company has received numerous grants and awards for its work and, in 2003, Ms. Eisenhower received the prestigious Artserve Michigan Governor’s Award for Arts and Culture – Michigan Artist.

In September of 1995, Eisenhower Dance Ensemble opened the doors to the EDE Center for Dance, and in January of 2008, the Center was relocated to a beautiful new facility on South Street in Rochester. A second EDE Center opened in Birmingham in September 2008. The Centers serve as bases for the company’s community outreach and education programs.

For its twentieth season, EDE is looking forward to a full season of events, which will keep the company creating and sharing the art of dance!
